Le Dorat and the Limousin

Some websites for tourist attractions near us in the Limousin, as well as some others that may be of interest:

www.ledorat.com   This site will tell you (in French) about our 'cité de caractère' of Le Dorat and its Collégiale.

www.the-limousin.co.uk   A complete guide to the Limousin Region, in English.

www.ville-limoges.fr   All the information you will need for visiting the lovely city of Limoges (with an English version). Includes details of the enamel and porcelain museums.

www.musee-adriendubouche.fr   Interesting and informative website of the National Porcelain Museum mentioned above.

www.ot-poitiers.fr   A comprehensive guide to Poitiers, the capital of the neighbouring Poitou-Charentes region, again with an (almost) English version.

www.parczooreynou.com   A delightful zoo, just south of Limoges and a good place to take a picnic.

www.geantsduciel.com   The fabulous bird show set in the medieval castle at Chauvigny (about a 45 minute drive).

www.la-vallee-des-singes.fr   'Singe' is the French word for Monkey. And there are plenty of them here to look at! Again, not far to go.

www.futuroscope.com   The giant high-tech film park, just to the north of Poitiers and easily reachable in a day trip.

www.oradour.org   Oradour-sur-Glane, the "Martyred Village" of World War Two, about half an hour's drive from Le Dorat.

We are adding a new section of tourist attractions and events that don't have websites, but may be of interest if you are coming to stay with us:

At nearby Bellac (about 10 minutes from Le Dorat), the big outdoor heated swimming pool has just re-opened. Fancy a dip?

Between us and Limoges, very close to the airport, is Parc Bellevue. Alton Towers it isn't, but a great amusement and adventure park to keep the kids busy.

If you have been lucky enough to have been in Le Dorat when the Farmer's Markets (Marchés de Producteurs de Pays) are on, you may like to know that the first one was on the evening of Thursday 19th June and then they were every two weeks, with the last one being on 28th August. We shall publish 2009 dates as soon as they are released.

2009 sees the next Ostensions here in Le Dorat. This is an important religious event held every seven years, where the guilded boxes containing the relics of the two local Saints, Israël and Théobald, are brought out of the Collégiale and paraded around Le Dorat along with other processions from local towns. The whole Ostensions start on 15th March and finish with a big ceremony at the Collégiale on 7th June.

LeDoratPostcards   My own nostalgic look at Le Dorat in old picture postcards.

www.receramics.com   An individual maker of high quality, hand-thrown, stoneware ceramics, here in town.

www.hautevienne.moonfruit.com   A website put together by a talented photographer friend of ours, with some interesting pictures of Le Dorat (almost as good as mine) and the local area.

www.ryanair.com   For low-cost air fares to Limoges (about 45 minutes drive to Le Dorat), or Poitiers (slightly over one hour's drive).

www.flybe.com   Now flying to Limoges from Southampton, Newcastle and Manchester.

market day

market day outside the Collégiale (held on the 13th of each month, unless that might be a Sunday)
